Project Management Movies

Let’s study the theory and practice interestingly and effectively!

The world is teeming with films that encompass the realm of Project Management. To leverage these resources, we routinely host pm.CinemaHall – a forum where we screen movies and documentaries featuring protagonists executing their projects. Each movie viewing is broken into segments, with a comprehensive discussion following each segment. We examine how characters initiated, planned, and implemented their projects, the tools and documents they utilized, their approach to risk and resource management, and how they dealt with project changes and managed people.

We find all the classics of project management on movie frames!

Session duration: 3-4 hours
Number of participants: 6 to 20 people

Upcoming pm.CinemaHall Session

Nothing from 19.03.2024 to 18.09.2024.

pm.CinemaHall Procedure

1. Preparing for pm.CinemaHall

We meticulously vet and select films to analyze during pm.CinemaHall. Few films encapsulate the entirety of project management processes and tools. Most showcase specific facets of project management, hence, we create unique tasks and educational materials for each session. Occasionally, to save time, we may cut some scenes while ensuring the main storyline and continuity remain intact.

2. During pm.CinemaHall

Initially, we engage in introductions and form teams (each with 3-6 members). The facilitator outlines the pm.CinemaHall and the film to be screened.

The teams are then assigned tasks, and instructions and materials are distributed. At times, the facilitator briefly discusses the segment of the project management methodology to be analyzed during the film viewing.

The film is viewed in logical episodes (ranging from 15 to 25 minutes). Each team member has responsibilities such as timekeeping, role identification, project plan creation, and documenting all things related to project management. After each episode, teams discuss techniques, tools, roles, documents, and project management processes, followed by a short report on task progress, which the facilitator records on a flipchart.

After the screening, teams conduct a final analysis and summarize their movie analysis. The teams then present their findings and completed tasks. On occasion, team competitions may be held.

Finally, we review lessons learned from the project depicted in the film and conclude the pm.CinemaHall. Participants offer feedback and receive certificates indicating 3-4 contact hours of formal project management training from a Type D training provider, “Training companies or consultants (e.g., training schools)”, which can be credited towards project management certification.

3. After the pm.CinemaHall

Following the pm.CinemaHall, we conduct an “After Action Review”. All ideas and developments from the teams are compiled into detailed movie analyses from a project management perspective, which we publish here: PMDoc.ua/en/tag/pmCinemaHall.

We encourage you to periodically revisit our analyses, either independently or with friends and colleagues, to enjoy these intriguing movies and concurrently:

  1. Gain aesthetic pleasure from the viewing experience.
  2. Reanalyze the film from a project management viewpoint.
  3. Develop insights and enhance your own knowledge and skills, learning from the film characters’ experiences.

Knowledge and Skills from pm.CinemaHall

Predicting the specific knowledge and skills participants will acquire from each film is challenging as all movies differ. However, experience suggests that participants’ psychological engagement in the project management processes depicted in films is significantly higher compared to traditional training. Participants empathize with film characters, facilitating a better understanding of correct and erroneous project decisions.

This type of learning easily translates to real-world situations in our projects at work and in life.

We look forward to welcoming you to pm.CinemaHall!
